Nowadays, we are looking for the smallest tricks to save money and consume less fuel. The problem is that at the same time we are not aware of some of the bad behaviors that we regularly repeat while driving. Involuntarily, by performing certain maneuvers while driving, it is thought to save fuel. But, really, we’re risking dire consequences for our car’s performance. This will force us to spend a lot of money in the end. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, find out what bad habit you need to give up.
Usually to ban it outright
When engaging downhill, many drivers often have a reflex to shift into neutral, i.e. not engaging the gear. They believe that this helps to save fuel, especially during this period when its cost is very high. Except that’s just a received thought: Contrary to what you might imagine, driving in neutral doesn’t really save fuel. This maneuver is therefore counterproductive and can cause internal damage to the vehicle. Do you know why ? Some may already know this, but many motorists do not.
In fact, the problem arises especially if you have an automatic gearbox, because this type is specifically designed to save money. In downhill mode, these cars put the appropriate gear, which allows for lower consumption. However, whether you have an automatic or manual transmission, leaving the car in neutral results in less vehicle control and can cause unexpected engine damage.
This is why you risk ruining the engine
Indeed, when driving without speed, you always keep your foot on the brake, and if necessary, you will not be able to accelerate. Your car’s pump will stop running at rpm. This also slows down the operation of the oil pump. As a result, the engine does not cool as it should. And if the cooling is not optimal, it can lead to long-term damage, thus causing engine failure. That is why this maneuver is not recommended!
Another important danger to keep in mind: You are not immune from any possible accident on the road. As mentioned earlier, you are no longer really in control of the vehicle. Therefore, if you accidentally hit a car on your way and do not have time to make the correct maneuver to perform emergency braking, you can cause a collision with another car. So you will be responsible for the accident and you will also have to pay damages. Therefore, it would be wise to avoid putting the gear in neutral when going downhill. Better to stay alert, have full control of your vehicle and engage the gear.
