Find out what the rarely used fourth aspect of the grater is for and how to use it.
What is the fourth aspect of the grater used for?
A grater is a kitchen utensil that has four sides, each with its very specific function.
A user of the Reddit portal (American community discussion site) decided to explain the function of one side of the grater. He asked what part of the grater with the smaller holes is. Some people have confirmed its use for fine grating cheese, especially hard cheeses like Parmesan. Another user writes, “It took me years to figure out that the best way to grate Parmesan, lemon, orange, or lemon zest is with this side.”
Martha Stewart, an expert on everyday household items, provided explanations. “The small holes are for fine grinding of cheese, chocolate, vegetables and other products,” she said.
How to clean the grater?
If you now know all the functions of a grater, you can safely use it in the kitchen. However, remember to clean it well every time. Always make sure there is no food in the slots. If there are greasy stains that are difficult to wash off, you can use this effective solution.
Just dip a sponge in the vinegar and rub the grater up and down. Stains and residue should disappear quickly, and it’s important to wash them again with soapy water and a little dishwashing liquid to get rid of the smell.
It can also happen that rust appears on the grater. So, prepare a simple mixture, rub lemon juice and salt on a grater and leave for two hours.
Another method is to make a paste with water and baking soda. This mixture can be left on the grater for a few minutes, and then rubbed with the rough side of the sponge. Then wash with dishwashing liquid.
After washing it, it is important to remove excess water and let it dry completely. Sometimes you put washed clothes in the dryer and forget about them for days. If you do not dry it properly, rust may appear on the surface of the metal grater.
Bonus tip: Putting the grater in the dishwasher may be the most practical solution. However, it must be remembered that not all utensils are suitable for prolonged washing in hot water. Even stainless steel can start to rust. To be sure that the dishwasher will not damage the grater, it is best to read the manufacturer’s recommendations or simply wash it by hand.
