Anyone who wants to use this new feature must understand that sent messages will be automatically deleted from chats after 7 days. Although all users can choose to activate this function or not, it should be noted that in group chats, only administrators have access to activate or deactivate Message Expiration.

Basically, all sent content comes with a 7-day timer, be it text messages, photos, files, or videos. However, if the settings are active, they will still be saved in the Pictures folder and may remain there even after a week.

NB : If your contacts have activated the temporary messaging function, you will see a small clock next to their profile picture or group chat picture. In addition, an alert will appear in the chat window indicating that the feature is enabled.

Few things to take into consideration

  • If the user has not viewed WhatsApp for seven days, the message they received will automatically disappear. However, he can still see the message preview in his notifications until he opens WhatsApp.
  • When replying to an ephemeral message, the text can still be in the chat after seven days.
  • If an expired message is forwarded to a chat where expired messages are disabled, the message will not disappear there.
  • If the user created a backup before the message disappeared, it will be saved there. However, it goes away once the backup is restored.

Good to know : Recipients can always forward temporary messages before they disappear or even take a screenshot to save them. Message content can be copied and saved before being deleted. For example, the camera can be used to take a picture of the expired message before it disappears.

How do I enable temporary messages?

To enable expired messages in iOS:

  • Open a WhatsApp chat.
  • Click on the contact’s name.
  • Click on transient messages.
  • Now select Enabled and Delay.

To enable expired messages in Android:

  • Open a WhatsApp chat.

  • Click on transient messages.
  • Now select Enabled.

Similarly, you can also enable expiration of messages in group chats on Android and iOS. However, remember that only administrators can make the appropriate settings.
